India-Bangladesh Cooperation in the Power Sector
Mr. P. Uma Shankar, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, is leading a high-level delegation of Indian power sector experts to Bangladesh from 29th January to 1st February 2013. During his visit, Mr. P. Uma Shankar will co-chair along with Secretary, Power Division of Bangladesh, the 5th meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee on Power Cooperation. This meeting will be preceded by the first Board meeting of the “India-Bangladesh Friendship Power Company”. The India-Bangladesh Friendship Power Company is a joint venture between NTPC Limited of India and Bangladesh Power Development Corporation, that has been formed to build the 1320 MW thermal power project at Rampal in Khulna. In addition to reviewing the progress on the Rampal project, Indian Power Secretary will also discuss the progress in the procurement of 500 MW power from India, and initiatives to expand cooperation in the sector between India and Bangladesh.
Koica installs 1,250 solar home systems
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica) has installed 20 solar-powered irrigation pumps and 1,250 solar home systems to provide electricity to neglected, poor farmers and villagers of various remote areas in Bangladesh. Koica, the Korean government’s developmental instrument, initiated the project to promote the use of environment friendly, green, renewable energy which will cope with electricity shortage and address climate change problem as part of its efforts to fulfil its social responsibility and climate change mandate. The Koica-supported project - ‘Solar Powered Irrigation Pumps and Solar Home Systems’ - was inaugurated on Monday at Modonhati, Rajshahi, said a press release. Koica and the Rural Electrification Board (REB) jointly celebrated the completion. Rajshahi City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Lee Yun-young, Resident Representative of Koica Bangladesh Office Kim Bok-Hee, Joint Secretary of ERD Mohammad Asif-uz-Zaman, Chairman of the REB Brig Gen Moin Uddin, Koica’s and the government high officials, and over 200 farmers and villagers benefiting from the project were present.
