2,988.5 MW of power supply affected as 14 power units fail on December 12

Fifteen power units worth 2,988.5 MW of generation capacity and forty five transmission lines across the country were taken offline on Wednesday. 8Three units, aggregating 910 MW, were taken out in the Northern region. All these units are expected to be revived within two days 8In the same region, two 210 MW units of the Anpara TPS were shut down for a short duration of the day due to tripping of outgoing transmission lines creating trouble in power evacuation. 8Meanwhile in the southern region, a 150 MW unit of the Meenakshi TPS was taken out for a few hours due to turbine differential expansion problems. 8Two units of the Kolghat TPS in West Bengal were temporarily made non operational due to developing faults. The unit 2 of the power plant was taken offline due to low demand. Both units have now been synchronised. 8In the western region, six power units failed affecting 1,067.5 MW of capacity of the region. A unit of the Chandrapura TPS and a unit of the Nashik power plant were shut down due to boiler tube leakage. The unit 2 of the Korba (E) expansion was taken out for GT wall cleaning. 8The first unit of the Agartala Gas Turbine power project (AGTPP), in the north east region, was also forced to shut down for inspection purposes. 8Fog and over voltage create a menace for smooth electricity evacuation in the northern region which witnessed twenty one transmission lines going offline during the day. 8In the eastern region, seven transmission lines had developed faults whereas eleven transmission lines had failed in the western region. 8Moreover, five transmission line including the HVDC Bhadravathi Pole 1 were taken out of service in the southern region.

Indiabulls Industrial Infrastructure Ltd to source power from group company IBRL for proposed SEZ

Indiabulls Industrial Infrastructure Ltd's proposed Multiproduct Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nashik, Maharashtra will source its power requirements from group company Indiabulls Realtech Limited's coal-based power plant of 2,700 MW capacity. 8Out of the total 1011.264 Ha of the SEZ area, 436.194 Ha have been earmarked for the power plant. Pertinently, the environment clearance has already been attained for the power project site. 8The SEZ developer has clearly stated that appropriate arrangements will be made for power evacuation and distribution to meet the estimated power demand of 82.8 MW for the SEZ project. 8An enclosed type diesel generator (DG) sets with Auto Mains Failure (AMF) panels will be provided for power back up, in line with the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). 8Moreover, an efficient effluent management, treatment and reuse scheme will be implemented in the power plant. This will be done to optimize various water systems so as to reduce intake water requirement and achieve ‘Zero Discharge Condition’ for the thermal power plant. 8Processed wastewater generated from different sections of the TPP will be effectively utilized within the plant itself.

India slips on WEC's energy sustainability index-I: Ranks second lowest among 94 WEC member countries

India's rank on the World Energy Council's (WEC) energy sustainability index 2012 has dropped down four places to a lowly 93 from last year, with the country's weak social equity and environmental footprint still posing a challenge for a sustainable and environmentally-sensitive energy system. 8WEC's latest report titled 'World Energy Trilemma: 2012 Energy Sustainability Index' highlights the plight of developing countries to use cleaner forms of energy on the path of industrialization, and juggle three main goals -- energy security, social equity and environmental impact mitigation -- to provide affordable energy to consumers. 8Balancing these 3 dimensions, or 'trilemma' as WEC puts it, can be a difficult act and requires strong political and economic frameworks. 8While few emerging countries have strengthened their energy policies and managed to climb up the index chart, albeit slowly, India's under-performance casts a serious doubt on whether the country can achieve its energy-related goals in the near future. 8To gain an insight into the challenges faced by WEC member countries, the energy council introduced a more intricate index analysis wherein nations are categorized into four economic groups A, B, C and D based on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. 8Amongst 24 developing nations that are clubbed together in Group D, with GDP per capita below US $ 6,000, India grabbed the twenty-third position, one level below Pakistan and at least 14 spots behind Sri Lanka for the year 2012.
