India opens call for bids in first offshore wind auction
It aims to hit 5GW of wind capacity by 2022.
The Indian government has invited interested bidders to submit expressions of interest (EoI) for the country's first offshore wind auction, which will take place in the gulf of Khambat on the coast of Gujarat (India). The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy estimates that offshore wind has become globally competitive in terms of tariffs and plans to develop 1,000 MW wind offshore project in the region.
India aims to achieve 5 GW of wind power capacity by 2022 and the offshore wind resource base makes for a strong case even if high upfront investment is required. However, the success of the project and the potential associated ventures is expected to depend on whether the sector will be subsidised or not.
