
Electrification now reaches 91% of Indian villages
According to India's Central Electricity Authority, a total of 5,40,469 villages have been electrified as part of the ongoing rural electrification programme in the country.
The number of un-electrified villages, as on November 30, 2011, stands at 53,263 out of the total of 5,93,732 villages identified for electrification, across 29 states and six union territories, by the end of XIth Plan, under the power ministry's flagship rural electrification programme, Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana.
Out of the estimated ultimate potential of electrical pump sets, 89.7% of pumpsets have been energized so far. Out of 1,95,94,000 pumpsets, the balance potential to be exploited from December onwards amounts to 18,31,480.
