Electricity cable theft affects water supply in 16 Pakistani towns
Karachi's water supply was reduced to half when pumping of water from the Dhabeji pumping station came to a halt due to a major power breakdown.
It reportedly occurred due to theft of electricity cables.
The sudden power outage caused a shortfall of over 275 million gallons of water, badly affecting the supply of as many as 16 out of total 18 towns of the metropolis.
Karachi Water and Sewerage Board managing director Misbahuddin Farid said that the power breakdown aggravated the city water supply which had been dwindling for the past week because of frequent and prolonged outages at its major installations at Dhabeji, Pipri, Gharo and Dumlottee.
He said that prolonged power outages and major breakdowns were not only creating an acute water shortage in many towns of the city, but were also causing damage to pumping machines due to jerks they received by sudden power breakdowns.
