Huge Malaysian power project said to be awarded without tender

There are allegations that the Malaysian government awarded a RM2.47 billion power plant project  to a Korean company that did not make a bid.

Solidariti Anak Muda Muda  (SAMM) national coordinator Badrul Hisham Shaharin said that based on a news report in March last year, nine companies were short listed for the project.

“But the Korean company was not in the list. However, on Dec 1 last year, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) awarded the tender to this Korean company,” claimed Badrul.

However, he gave no supporting documents to substantiate his claims.

Among the companies tendered for the project were YTL Power International Berhad-Marubeni Corp, Amcorp Power Sdn Bhd-Mitsui and Co Limited and Mastika Lagenda Sdn Bhd.

Badrul, who is also the Rembau PKR division chief, alleged that the tender was awarded 100 percent to the foreign entity without local participation.

“Usually all foreign companies bidding for local projects must sign a joint venture with a local company.

Badrul urged Tenaga Nasional Berhad to explain the matter saying RM2.47 billion is a huge sum.

“We also need to know how this will affect our electricity tariff later on,” he said.
