
West Bengal gives empahsis on hydropower development
West Bengal will turn hydropower to improve power supply.
The state government will stress on development of hydel power generation capacity during the 12th and 13th Plan period.
The move is alsointended to increase reliable and sustainable generation capacity.
As the principal hydro power developer of the state, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) has identified 6,300 mw of potential. These includes hydro power potential including canal falls of 1500 mw and pumped storage potential of 4800 mw.
WBSEDCL has, now decided to put greater impetus on the detailed survey & investigation and preparation of detailed project report (DPR) for the identified new conventional hydroelectric schemes in Darjeeling hills and has identified pumped storage schemes at Ayodhya hills in Purulia district.
The state owned agency has almost completed detailed investigations and the preparation of DPR for several projects.
Preparation of master plan to identify the residual hydro power potential of the state and preliminary investigation is on to identify the conventional hydro power potential in North Bengal & South Bengal rivers. Preliminary investigation is also on to identify the hydro power potential of the existing irrigation canal system
