UAE announces Q2 auction for clean energy certificates

Registration ends on 14 June.

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) opened the registration for the Clean Energy Certificates (CEC) second quarter auction which will close on 14 June.

In a statement, EWEC said the CECs are issued in units of one megawatt-hour, proving that the consumed electricity is sourced from renewable or clean energy sources.

In effect, CECs will allow businesses to decarbonise their energy consumption and cut their Scope 2 emissions.

“The Clean Energy Certificates scheme is an example of Abu Dhabi’s leadership in achieving its sustainability targets. Its impact has grown year-on-year, amplifying our collective contribution to accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions associated with business operations and facilitating the realisation of the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative,” EWEC CEO Othman Al Ali said.

“By collaborating with leading entities, EWEC is enabling organisations to lower their Scope 2 emissions in a transparent and accountable manner,” he added.
