TNB partners with Microsoft to accelerate digitalisation
It will support TNBs push for a smart and digitalised grid.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Microsoft signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would support the energy firm’s digitalisation and boost its goal to implement a smart grid.
In a statement, TNB President and CEO Dato’ Indera Ir. Bahrain Din said that the MOU will allow the companies to study modernising the energy firm’s digital foundation through adopting external use cases for its Grid of the Future and Winning the customer strategic pillars.
Under the memo, TNB and Microsoft will also collaborate on looking for opportunities through a series of identified pilot projects for two years.
“Digitalisation is an important element of TNB’s Grid of the Future strategic pillar, which is a critical enabler in delivering the nation’s energy transition and to fast track TNB’s own sustainability aspiration of achieving net zero emissions by 2050,” Bahrain said.

The Grid of the Future pillar aims to establish a smart, automated, and digitally-enabled grid to ensure maximum efficiency and reliable power supply.
TNB said it would implement key digital projects such as smart energy management systems, advanced distribution systems, advanced distribution management systems, and intelligent asset performance systems and expand the substations tracking and monitoring coverage through internet-of-things and geospatial technology to transform the grid.
Bahrain said as part of accelerating the Grid of the Future and Winning the Customer, it committed to invest RM2.5 to 2.7b over the next three years as part of key digitalisation projects under the Regulatory Period 3.
