TNB, China state utilities partner to support ASEAN Power Grid

The power grid will be transformed with high-voltage direct current technology.

Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) partnered with Chinese state-owned power utilities to boost the ASEAN Power Grid with high-voltage direct current technology (HVDC).

In a statement, TNB Preside and CEO Dato’ Seri Ir. Bahrain Din said the technology is crucial in enabling efficient power trading and integration of renewable energy sources amongst the markets in the region.

“Interconnection using HVDC technology will benefit power trading, resource sharing and RE integration between neighbouring ASEAN countries. We are looking at potentially collaborating with China’s state-owned power utilities,” Bahrain said.

Bahrain also noted that the company’s efforts for the grid sector will support the ASEAN Power Grid, noting that the country's favourable renewable energy policies also play an important role in data centre investments.

The company has completed six data centre projects accounting for around 292 megawatts of demand.

TNB has signed five memoranda of understanding with neighbouring countries for interconnection and renewable energy generation.
