Sarawak speeds up hydropower development

Hydropower seen as solution to its growing energy needs.

It is expected to power the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and its related projects. SCORE has seen investments of US$7.5 billion, of which US$3.8 billion were foreign investments and US$2.1 billion were joint ventures between Malaysian and foreign investors.

Sarawak State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohd Morshidi Abdul Ghani said Sarawak has long been recognized as having a large potential for the development of hydroelectric power because of its high rainfall and suitable topography.

Sarawak has a potential hydro energy of 20,000 MW with a total energy output of 87,000 MW per year.

Sarawak’s newest dam, the Murum hydroelectric project, is currently nearing completion and is expected to be operational by the end of next year.
