
Pakistan approves funding for three nuclear power plants
Plants will be built with Chinese assistance.
Pakistan’s Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec) is expected to approve US$14 billion in projects that include three nuclear power stations in Karachi.
The Karachi Nuclear Power Plant complex consists one operating and three planned Nuclear Power Plants. KANUPP-2, KANUPP-3 and KANUPP-4 will be built with assistance from China. The three new plants have a combined capacity of 2,400 MW.
The operational KANUPP-1 ia a single unit CANDU-type PHWR reactor with a total gross capacity of 137MWe built in 1972.
KANUPP-2 will cost US$9.6 billion and produce around 1,100 MW. It is an indigenous nuclear power plant that wil replace KANUPP-I.
The KANUPP reactor site is on the Arabian Sea coast, about 17.7 km west of Karachi.
