Nigeria seeks $5b loan for 3.05GW hydropower project

The project involves four dams to be built along a power station and 700km transmission line.

The federal government of Nigeria has formally requested a loan from the Chinese state-held Export-Import Bank of China (China EXIM Bank) for the construction of the 3,050 MW Mambilla hydropower project in Gembu (Taraba State, Nigeria). Under previous financing arrangements, China EXIM Bank agreed to provide 85% of the US$5.8bn project - corresponding to a US$4.9bn loan - while the federal government of Nigeria would provide the remaining 15% (US$870m).

The scope of work is extensive and includes four dams, which will be built along with a power station and a 700 km transmission line. China Gezhouba, Sinohydro, CGOC and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) will handle the construction, which is scheduled to take about 72 months and has not started yet (commissioning in late 2025 at the earliest).
