India's first high-voltage direct current system completed
It will help counter power deficit in southern India.
Energy technology company Siemens Energy and electric wire manufacturer Sumitomo Electric have announced the completion of India’s first high-voltage direct current 2,000 MW (HVDC) link.
The electricity transmission system, powered by voltage-sourced converter and DC-XLPE cable technology, comprises two converter stations connected through two links composed of the DC-XLPE cable and overhead transmission lines.
“It enables the power exchange between Pugalur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and Trichur in Kerala State in South-West India and supports transmission operator Power Grid Corporation of India to counter power deficit in India’s southern region and improve the grid stability,” a statement by Siemens Energy read.
Siemens Energy has supplied the two converter stations for the system, whilst Sumitomo Electric has delivered the XLPE HVDC cable system.
Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the link in February.
