India speeds up planning of 8 hydropower projects

The projects' total capacity is 6,352MW and worth US$9b.

The Indian government is speeding up the planning of eight hydroelectric projects in the Jammu and Kashmir region, which will have a total installed capacity of 6,352 MW at a project cost of Rs56,700 crore (US$9b), according to Enerdata.

Most of the mentioned projects are at the so-called detailed project report (DPR) stage, which means they are still in the initial feasibility studies process. They are either planned or approved but none of them broke ground yet.

"The mentioned projects are: the 1,856 MW Sawalkote (Ramban and Udhampur districts), the 390 MW Kirthai I and the 930 MW Kirthai II, the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul, the 540 MW Kwar, the 624 MW Kiru, the 800 MW Bursar and the 212 MW Ujh hydropower stations projects. If all these projects come true, their combined installed capacity is planned to double the current installed hydropower generation capacity (3,220 MW) in the Jammu-and-Kashmir state," Enerdata said.
