Epson to develop biomass power plant in Japan

It is expected to generate 14 million kWh of electricity annually.

Epson Singapore is planning to develop the company’s first biomass power plant in Japan which is expected to start operation in fiscal year 2026 which ends in March 2027.

In a statement, Epson said the Minami Shinshu Biomass power plant will be located in Iida City in Nagano Prefecture and will have an energy output of 1,990 kilowatts (kW).

The plant, which occupies a lot area of 32,200 square metres, is expected to generate 14 million kWh of electricity annually with unused wood, bark and mushroom media as main fuel sources.

“The new power plant is intended to provide Epson with self-generated renewable electricity on a continuous basis and reduce the ratio of electricity the company purchases from external power companies, thereby promoting wider public adoption of renewable electricity,” Epson said.

“The electricity generated will be sold to the market under a feed-in premium (FIP) scheme, and Epson will convert the electricity that it uses into renewable electricity by leveraging the environmental value created through power generation,” it added.

The power from the plant is also expected to supply power to local facilities in case of a disaster or other emergency.
