CNNC finishes hot testing of Fuqing-5 nuclear reactor
It will be commissioned in 2020.
China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has completed hot testing at the fifth unit of the Fuqing nuclear power plant in the Fujian province of China. The 1,087 MW (1,150 MW gross) Hualong One reactor, the first in the world, passed the cold hydrostatic testing phase in May 2019.
The Fuqing site will accommodate six reactors, of which four 1,087 MW Chinese-designed CPR-1000 units. The first one was commissioned in November 2014, the second unit in October 2015, the third one in October 2016 and the fourth one in September 2017. In April 2015, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China gave its final approval for the construction of two additional Hualong One units, Fuqing-5 and Fuqing-6, which are expected to be commissioned in 2020. The Fuqing nuclear power plant project is owned by China Nuclear Power Company (51%), Huadian Fuxin Energy Company (39%) and Fujian Investment and Development Group (10%).
On top of the Fuqing-5-6 reactors, two other Hualong One reactors are expected to be connected to the Chinese grid in 2020, namely Fangchenggang 3 and 4 in the Guangxi province. In addition, Hualong One reactors will be installed at the Zhangzhou-1 reactor in Fujian and at Taipingling in Guangdong. Overseas, two reactors (promoted as HPR1000) are currently under construction at Karachi in Pakistan.
