Canadian Solar wins 193 MW battery projects in Japan

It secured 13.3% of the total energy storage projects awarded.

Canadian Solar won the tender for three battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 193 megawatts (MW) under Japan’s first long-term decarbonisation power source auction.

In a statement, Canadian Solar said the projects will operate for over a 20-year period in exchange for capacity reserve payments to offset fixed storage system costs.

The projects, located in Aomori, Fukushima, and Yamaguchi, are expected to start operations between 2027 and 2028.

The company added that the battery projects will utilise the SolarBank 3.0 system from e-STORAGE which is a subsidiary of its unit CSI Solar Co., Ltd.

Canadian Solar Chairman and CEO said that its project pipeline in Japan now stands at 1.376 gigawatt-hours for energy storage and 213 megawatt-peak for solar.
