Bangladesh's first LNG import terminal starts operations after delay

Bad weather blocked an FSRU's efforts to dock properly.

Bangladesh's first LNG import terminal in Moheshkhali (Cox’s Bazar, southeast Bangladesh) has started operations following delays caused by technical problems. The floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) arrived on site in April 2018 to offload a maiden LNG cargo from Qatar and was initially slated for startup in May 2018 but has been delayed until now because bad weather hampered the FSRU’s efforts to dock properly, connect to the domestic infrastructure and offload its cargo.

The Moheshkhali Floating LNG project has a capacity of 5.1 bcm/year and a storage capacity of 138 000 m3. It will be operated by Excelerate Energy over a 15-year period on a BOT basis and will be transferred to Petrobangla afterward. Bangladesh has signed an MoU with Qatar to import 5.4 bcm/year of LNG worth US$1.56bn/year.
