ACWA Power signs PPA for 5 GW wind farm in Uzbekistan

The project can meet the demand of around 4.5 million households.

Saudi Arabia ACWA Power signed a power purchase agreement with the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan for the largest wind farm in Central Asia with a five gigawatt (GW) capacity.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the 5 GW Aral Wind Independent Power Producer project, located in the Karakalpakstan region, will be deployed in five phases.

The project will generate around 18,500 GW-hours of electricity annually and cut around 247 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

“This historic project will provide clean power to approximately 4.5 million houses in Uzbekistan, a country which is propelling its energy transition thanks to its ambitious and decisive leadership,” said Mahamman Abunayyan, founder and chairman of the Board of ACWA Power.

Uzbekistan is ACWA Power’s largest market after its home country with a total investment of $13.9b. The company has 11.6 GW of portfolio in the country, 10.1 GW of which is renewable.
