TNB boosts 755kW of projects in Malaysian island

TNB will rehabilitate a hydro station and install solar panels on the island’s jetty.

The subsidiary of Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), TNB Energy Services Sdn. Bhd. (TNBES), has launched two renewables projects with a combined capacity of 755kW in Tioman Island, which is an island and popular snorkelling spot located 32 km off the coast of Pahang.

According to an announcement, TNB is rehabilitating its mini hydro station in Sungai Mentawak and installing solar panels on the rooftop of the island’s jetty and TNB offices. Works as of November 2018 for the mini hydro station, has reached 87% completion while for solar panels, 92%.

Tioman is expected to get 15% of power from renewables. A bulk of power for the island is supplied by TNB through its Diesel Generator power stations in Kampung Tekek and Kampung Genting with a total capacity of 9MW.

The Malaysian government has set a target of 20% energy generated by renewables by 2030.
