Philippines tests improved coco-biodiesel fuel

Will help cut carbon emissions.

The Philippines is testing an improved coco-biodiesel blend called B5, or diesel fuel that contains 5% biofuel, in public transport vehicles.

The National Biofuels Board launched the on-road test of B5 that will last for next 25 days. B5 will be used as fuel for several “jeepneys” to compare it with an existing blend containing 2% coco-biodiesel.

After the 25-day road test, the jeepneys will be tested for fuel economy and power efficiency. The government believes mandating the use of coco-biofuels will boost local consumption of coconut oil and increase farmers’ income.

It will reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, protect public health and promote sustainable growth. The government estimates that raising the blend to 5% will create over 37,000 jobs.
