China’s largest NiH battery plant now operational

Nickel-hydrogen battery plant is located in Changsha City.

Hunan Corun New Energy's NiH battery plant features fully automated lines and has an annual production capacity of 60,000 NiH batteries for motor vehicles.

China plans to reduce average fuel consumption per 100 kilometers of passenger vehicles to 6.9 liters by 2015 and to 5 liters by 2020. China’s auto industry can meet the 2015 target by simply improving the power system. Car makers, however, must develop other methods to meet the goal for 2020 and hybrid power system seems to be the most practical choice.

A recent survey said auto industry executives believe hybrid cars are the most effective solution to reducing fuel consumption. The survey also urged the government to issue measures to attain the 5 liter goal.

In 2011, Corun acquired an automotive battery factory of Japan’s Matsushita, one of the world’s three largest NiH battery factories. Corun’s Changsha plant combines Japan’s technological advantages with China’s low production costs. The Changsha plant is China’s first independent hybrid battery manufacturing facility.
