Mumbai plans to build 10 waste-to-energy power plants
Each will process 1,000 metric tonnes of garbage.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation proposes building at least 10 waste-to-energy plants to process 8,000 metric tonnes of garbage generated by the city every day.
Each plant will beed five to six acres to process at least 1,000 metric tonnes of garbage. The city is scouting for land on its western suburbs.
The need to build waste-to-energy power plants arose following a government investigation of BMC's earlier plan to shut down the Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds. Despite this, Mumbai intends to go ahead with the new project and cannot wait for the investigation to be completed.
BMC will bids from across the globe over the next 14 days. Unlike the previous project where the operator was the only investor, BMC will invest 50%.
