Malaysia launches fourth round of 1GW solar tender

The maximum project will be halved to 50MW.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Malaysia has launched the fourth round of its Large Scale Solar (LSS) procurement scheme, offering 1GW of new solar capacity to be developed.

Each project developer will be allowed to submit up to three bids and the maximum project size will be halved from 100MW to 50MW, in order to have more developers participating in the tender. 500MW will be reserved to solar power projects ranging between 10MW and 30MW and the remaining 500MW for projects between 30MW and 50MW. The winning projects will have to be connected to the grid by the end of 2023.

LSS was created in 2016 to replace the feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme in place. In the first two rounds (2016 and 2017), 250MW and 460MW of solar projects were awarded. The third round attracted 6.7GW of power capacity bids, but only five bidders with a combined capacity of 490MW were selected.
