KEPCO inked $320m deal for 4GW transmission project

The project will link power to Seoul metropolitan area.

According to Enerdata, the South Korean electric utility Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has awarded a US$320m contract for the construction of a 4,000 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link to power Seoul metropolitan area (South Korea) to KAPES, its joint venture with GE Power. KAPES launched by KEPCO and Alstom (taken over by GE) in 2013 to focus on developing new HVDC project and increase South Korea's transmission grid capacity.

The HVDC link will include a 500 kV HVDC Bipole with two converter stations and will transmit power to the Seoul Metropolitan area, which represents approximately 40% of the country's electricity demand. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021.
