India's NTPC eyes shutting down two coal-fired plants

Their combined capacity is 1.4GW.

National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) plans to shut down two coal-fired assets with a combined capacity of 1,460 MW, of which the 460 MW coal-fired plant in Talcher, Odisha (India) and a 1,000 MW plant in Singrauli, Madya Pradesh (India). Enerdata said that the company also intends to build new power plants on both sites, each with the capacity to generate 1,320 MW.

The new Talcher power plant will be built in two phases of 660 MW each and is scheduled for completion by 2021 while the Singrauli project date has not been disclosed yet. The expected investment will amount to about Rup 20,000 crore in total (around US$3bn)

Besides, NTPC mulls the acquisition of the 1,000 MW Chhabra thermal power plant from the government of Rajasthan.

"The four existing units of the Chhabra power plant were commissioned between 2010 and 2014 at over Rup 5,700 crore (around US$889m). Two more units of 660 MW each are scheduled to be transferred to NTPC after their completion," Enerdata added.
