China’s coal power consumption to halt growth by 2025

Non-fossil fuel sources will dominate the country’s power mix by around 2045.

The consumption of electricity generated from coal-fired power plants in China is expected to stop increasing by around 2025, with oil demand expected to peak before 2027, according to the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec).

Sinopec presented the findings of its reports about China’s energy, hydrogen, and chemical industry outlook at a press conference in Saudi Arabia.

During the presentation, Sinopec also stated that natural gas use is expected to increase and peak by 2040, with non-fossil energy seen to dominate that country’s total energy supply by around 2045.

Meanwhile, the country’s hydrogen energy consumption is expected to reach nearly 86 million tonnes by 2060, bringing the industry’s worth to (RMB4.6t).

The share of non-fossil fuel use for hydrogen production is also expected to reach 93% during the same period, led by solar and wind which will contribute two-thirds of the production.
