China Huadian eyes closing down 14 coal-fueled plants

Overall power generation of the facilities is around 1.86 TWh annually.

The Chinese power utility China Huadian has unveiled plans to shut down 14 outdated coal-fired power plants, which have a total combined power generation of approximately 1.86 TWh/year. Besides, the company expects to reduce its consumption by 4 Mt of coal in 2018 by shutting smaller power plants in the Shanxi, Guangdong, Sichuan province and Xinjiang regions (China).

China Huadian is one of the country's leading power generators with a total installed capacity of 143 GW. This announcement fits into the strategy of the National Energy Administration (NEA), which ordered in 2017 that 11 provinces (including Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi and other north-western areas) stop more than 100 coal-fired power projects with a cumulated power capacity of more than 100 GW, to curb domestic coal consumption.
