Nepal to export 1,000 MW of electricity to India

Officials from both countries also discussed matters related to trade and infrastructure.

India is set to receive 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Nepal, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

“Glad to note that Nepal will be exporting close to 1,000 MW of electricity to India, a new milestone,” he said on a social media post. “Our Neighbourhood First policy and unique people-to-people & cultural connect propels our relationship forward.”

This was announced after a meeting with his Nepalese counterpart Arzu Rana Deuba who was in India for an official visit.

Aside from energy, the two officials also talked about areas of cooperation in trade, connectivity, and infrastructure development.

Prior to this, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in India has approved the investment of $6.95b for the 669-megawatt (MW) Lower Arun Hydro Electric Project in Nepal, according to state-owned firm SJVN.
