India’s coal production from captive, commercial mines up 35% in Q1 FY 2025

For the power sector, it was up 20.5%.

Coal produced from captive and commercial coal blocks increased 35% to 39.53 million tonnes (MT) in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (Q1 FY 2025), the Indian government said. 

According to the Ministry of Coal, the same was observed in the dispatch data, which increased 34.25% to 45.68 MT in Q1 of FY 2025. 

All sectors also showed improvements in coal production and dispatch in the same period. 

In the power sector, production was up 20.5% to 30.16 MT, whilst dispatch was up 23.3% to 35.65 MT.

Production for the non-regulated sector jumped 77% to 2.55 MT, whilst its dispatch data showed a 43.4% increase to 2.38 MT. 

For sale of coal, production surged 143% to 6.81 MT in Q1, whilst dispatch jumped 117.67% to 7.64 MT.

“The primary goal of the Ministry is to significantly boost coal production, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply to meet our nation’s escalating energy needs. Through collaborative efforts and targeted support, the Ministry aims to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and output across the coal sector,” the ministry said.
