Australia eyes 500MW dispatchable capacity for Western Australian WEM

This will support renewable energy targets. 

The Australian Government said it will start seeking bids by mid-July for clean dispatchable capacity projects in the Western Australian Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM).

“The Western Australian electricity sector is undergoing rapid transformation and requires significant investment in new generation and storage capacity,” authorities said in a statement. 

The government said the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 2 will target 500 megawatts of four-hour equivalent dispatchable capacity.

Through the scheme, Australia aims to deliver an additional 32 gigawatts of capacity by 2030, and achieve the government’s target of 82% renewable electricity by 2030.

AEMO Services Limited will manage the CIS tender 2 process on behalf of the government.

Australia said it will conduct CIS tenders every six months between 2024 to 2027.
