Taipower's 70 years of monopoly in Taiwan power sector just ended

Government gives the go signal to liberalise green energy supply.

Taiwan passed an amendment to its Electricity Act that now allows restructuring of state-owned Taipower and allows green energy to be supplied directly to consumers.

Prior to the law changes, green energy suppliers sold electricity only to Taipower. With the new amendment, other suppliers of traditional energy will also be allowed to sell electricity directly to consumers, effectively ending Taipower's 70 years of sector monopoly.

The law change also dictates that Taipower's operations be split into two sectors: for power generation and for power transmission, distribution, and sale.
