Sumitomo Corporation to retire 56 MW coal-fired plant

The power plant has been operating since October 2004.

Sumitomo Corporation will stop the operation of the 56-megawatt Onohama Power Plant at the end of March 2024, nearly 20 years since the plant started generating power in October 2004.

In a statement, Sumitomo said the decision is in line with its goal to achieve carbon neutrality.

Located in Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture, the Onohama Power Station is composed of two units, with the first unit with a 50 MW capacity and the second unit with 6 MW.

The power plant is operated by Summit Onoham S-Power Corporation which is 65% owned by Summit Energy Corporation, a 100% subsidiary of Sumitomo and 35% by Nihonkaisui Corporation.
