Philippines DOE and US partner to enhance energy workforce and promote renewables

The US will support the implementation of the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.

The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) signed two memoranda of understanding (MOU) during the Indo-Pacific Business Forum to boost the country’s energy sector workforce and drive the adoption of renewable energy.

In a statement, the DOE signed the first MOU with the Philippine-American Educational Foundation or the Fulbright Commission to create a framework to provide scholarship opportunities and human resource development programmes for the local energy sector.

Under the agreement, US experts will provide consultations, training, and lectures to the department and selected Philippine universities and institutions.

The partnership will also offer visiting fellowship awards for Filipinos for advanced research, training programmes and educational exchanges in US institutions.

Meanwhile, the second deal was signed with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)anchoring on the two countries’ partnership to provide assistance to the DOE to improve energy utility performance, and advanced energy sources and systems deployment.

The USAID will also provide technical and ancillary support in implementing the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and crafting a Smart and Green Grid Plan.
