India now home to world's largest solar power farm
The $679m facility was built in just eight months.
A sprawling 2,500-acre solar power farm in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, India just nabbed the title of world's largest solar power plant in a single location. The farm's capacity is 648MW, enough to power light up 150,000 homes and beat the former title holder Topaz Solar Farm in California, which produces 550MW.
The Kamuthi facility was built in just eight months by Indian firm Adani Power and cost US$679m. It has 2.5m solar panels cleaned daily by solar-powered robots.
Adani Group CEO Vneet Jaain said in a statement, “Before us, the largest solar power plant at a single location was in California in the US. That was 550 MW and was completed in around three years. We wanted to set up a solar plant of 648 MW in a single location in less than a year.”
Global News likened the vast site to 60 Taj Mahals.
