China's installed solar power capacity surged three-fold to 20GW
It has widened its lead against Germany as the top solar generator.
China has installed a whopping 20GW of solar power capacity in the first half of 2016, impressively tripling its capacity a year ago.
According to state news agency Xinhua, the capacity surge further pushed China away from second-comer Germany as the world's top solar generator.
Xinhua cited Wang Bohua, General Secretary of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association as saying solar developers were compelled to complete installations ahead of a proposed reduction in solar power paid for by grid operators.
The proposal pushes for the price to be cut to below $0.15 per kWh after June 30. The deadline spurred the rush, hence the skyrocketing capacity figures.
China's solar power output currently stands at 3,300Gwh according to the National Statistics Bureau.
