AGL to cease Torrens Island ‘B’ Power Station operation in 2026

Its economic viability will be affected by the completion of Project Energy Connect.

AGL Energy said it will close the Torrens Island “B” Power Station on 30 June 2026 as it pushes for turning the Torrens Island site into a low-carbon industrial Energy Hub.

In a statement, AGL said the closure of the power station is in line with the planned completion of the Project Energy Connector interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales in mid-2026.

The interconnector could affect South Australia’s gas-fired generation and the power station’s economic viability.

The 800-megawatt Power Station that started operating in 1976 provides electricity and grid ancillary services to South Australia.

AGL said the first of the four “B1” generating units stopped operation in October 2021, but the remaining three will retire on 30 June 2026, along with the “B” Power Station.
