India's NTPC commissions new 800MW coal-fired plant in Kudgi

NTPC now operates 51.4GW of capacity.

Enerdata reported that India's largest thermal power producer NTPC has commissioned the second 800 MW unit of its Kudgi supercritical coal-fired power plant in the State of Karnataka in India.

Construction of the Kudgi project Phase 1 including three 800 MW units (total capacity of 2,400 MW) started in 2013 and the first one started commercial operations in July 2017. The third 800 MW unit is well advanced and should be commissioned in 2018. A second phase of 1,600 MW is under consideration but the project has not been started yet. Most of the power generated at Kudgi will be consumed in Karnataka, while Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala will also benefit from the project.

With this new unit under operation, NTPC will cross the 51 GW mark, with a total installed capacity of 51,383 MW.
