China invests US$8 billion in coal gasification project
Project at Xinjiang Uygur is one of four.China has also given its approval to huge coal gasification project. The National Development and Reform Commission has ratified four coal gasification projects with a total output capacity of 15 billion cubic meters and an investment of US$16 billion.China’s growing economy has been fuelled largely by coal power that has led to high pollution levels. Coal gasification, however, will become a key sector in China’s clean energy initiative.In 2011, global emissions increased by 1 billion tonnes, with 720 million tonnes attributable to China.
