India to export additional 150 MW to Nepal via electricity market

Nepal will import additional 150MW from the Indian electricity market despite the latter's power deficit.

While India has agreed to increase the quantum of trade of power to 200 MW from the current level of 50 MW, it has been forced to refuse the Nepalese delegation`s suggestion of importing the requisite amount via the PEC.

Indian authorities have pointed out that Bihar, which is responsible for exporting a large portion of the 50 MW quantum to Nepal, has been facing power deficit of the order of 300 MW.

Furthermore, the two states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been grappling with a similar facing power deficit situation and are definitely not in a position to supply any additional power to Nepal.

In lieu of the current state of affairs, it has been settled that Nepal will buy power from the Indian electricity market through open access from a source of their choice, including Power Exchanges operating in India.

For this purpose, India has informed that Nepal would be given open access through the state transmission networks of Bihar, UP and Uttarakhand, in a non-discriminatory manner, for purchase of power as per the latter`s requirements.
