Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company invites bids for grid-scale 500MW energy storage facility

The plant should be capable of at least eight hours of discharge per day and three hours of continuous discharge.

State-owned Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company (MPPMCL) has invited proposals from domestic and global players to demonstrate and discuss up to 500MW in energy storage solutions, a report by Livemint revealed.

The firm, which is the holding company for the three discoms in Madhya Pradesh, is seeking to develop energy storage solutions including the deployment of microgrids for grid stabilisation and energy forecasting. The storage plant should be capable of at least eight hours of discharge per day and three hours of continuous discharge.

Participants can propose any storage technology options, including chemical batteries (lithium ion, advanced lead acid, sodium sulphur and flow batteries), pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage and ﬂywheels, to supply energy to MPPMCL.

“The grid-scale energy storage is expected to play a pivotal role in providing ancillary services, balancing real-time demand and supply, integrating renewable energy and improving stability of electricity grids,” the report noted.

Out of Madhya Pradesh’s total installed power capacity of 19.79MW as of January 2019, 3,827MW or 19.3% reportedly came from renewable sources.

The state has given bidders until 2 August to submit their proposals.
