GE and EDF sign agreement for the construction of 6 EPRs in India

The reactors are rated 1,600 MWe each at the 9.9 GW Jaitapur nuclear power project by NPCIL.

The French energy group EDF has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with General Electric (GE) for the construction of six European Pressurized Reactors (EPRs) rated 1,600 MWe each at the 9.9 GW Jaitapur nuclear power project developed by the state-run Indian nuclear utility Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in Ratnagiri (Maharashtra, India).

GE Power will design the reactors' conventional island and supply its main components, whille EDF will be responsible for the engineering processes covering the entire project including its nuclear island, conventional island, and auxiliary systems.

The Jaitapur site was chosen by EDF and NPCIL in March 2018 for the deployment of the EPRs. The facility will be owned and operated by NPCIL, which shall be responsible for obtaining all the required authorisations and certifications for the project, as well as the construction of the reactors and associated site infrastructures. The next step will be a binding EDF tender, which is expected for the end of 2018.
