Taiwan eyes 20% renewables share in power generation by 2025

It targets only 30% coal by then.

Taiwan emphasised how serious it is in ditching nuclear power plants and shifting to more renewables by 2025 as President Tsai Ing-wen said that the country will get 20% of its power from renewable sources.

The new fuel mix that the government is targeting is 20% renewables, 50% natural gas, and 30% coal by 2025. This is the same year that nuclear power plants will be phased out, however Nuclear Power Plant No. 1 in New Taipei City will be the first to be offline by 2019.

The newly announced energy mix will help cut down its carbon emissions and decrease smog pollution.

The initial plans entail that state-owned utility firm Taipower and the private sector will invest US$97.6b in energy infrastructures.
