Fossil fuel emissions to peak by 2025: report

Carbon emissions are expected to hit 39Gtpa in two years.

Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are expected to reach their peak by 2025, Rystad Energy reported.

Over this period, emissions are projected to hit about 39 gigatonnes per year in 2025 before it sees a steady decline annually.

“Peak fossil fuel CO2 emissions within the next two years is an outstanding global achievement, exceptional when considering the current supply chain roadblocks and the high focus on energy security,” Artem Abramov, head of cleantech research at Rystad Energy, said.

“If the industry can maintain this momentum, global warming of fewer than 2.0 degrees Celsius is within reach.”

In 2022, emissions reached a record high as countries worked to secure energy supply at affordable cost amidst the Russian-led conflict in Ukraine that affected gas supply.

Carbon emissions from power and heat generation will likely peak this year before it declines, albeit gradually, in the coming years.
