China needs effective solutions for energy hunger
Uses up one fifth of global coal consumption.
The China International Energy Cooperation Report 2012/2013 shows that China’s energy consumption will probably rise to eight or nine billion standard coal equivalent or TCE in the future if it increases by 200 million TCE every year. China consumed about 3.6 billion tons TCE in 2012
With energy demand increasing every year, China has become the largest energy consumer in the world. The growing concern from the international community for limiting global climate change is putting mounting pressure on China to cut back on coal pollution. Coal consumption still amounts to 70% of China’s total energy consumption.
China's energy resources per capita are much lower than the average world level due to its large population. As a result, China's dependency of foreign oil has exceeds 55%,
China is also the world's top annual emitter of carbon dioxide. China is focusing on boosting energy restructuring, and developing clean energy in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
Natural gas currently only accounts for about 5% of China's primary energy consumption, while the global average is almost 24%. Nuclear power currently accounts for only 2% of China's electricity output but the average world level is 16%.
