4 Japanese energy firms chosen for offshore wind power project in Akita Prefecture

The project will be located off Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City in Akita Prefecture.

JERA Co., Inc. (JERA), Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (Tohoku), and Itochu Corporation were selected as primary operators for an offshore wind power project in Akita Prefecture.

The project is one of the largest to ever been undertaken in Japan.

Through the consortium organised by JERA, the four entities will take charge of the development, construction, and operations of the projects in Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City. All parties will generate new synergies as a commitment to long-term, stable, and efficient wind power.

The agreement adheres to the “Opinion of the Council on the Sea Area Offshore Oga City, Katagami City, and Akita City in Akita Prefecture”, advancing on the principles of coexistence and co-prosperity with local communities and the fishing industry.

Similarly, it endorses strong cooperation with residents and other stakeholders for the development of the local economy and the transition through decarbonisation.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism have facilitated the selection process and approved the selected firms for the project.
