Philippines vows to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030

The country initially aimed to cut emissions by 70%.

The Philippines has submitted its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) aiming to cut down greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030.

The country promised 2.71% unconditional and 72.29% conditional reductions, compared to a business-as-usual scenario projecting GHG emissions to 3,340 MtCO2eq in 2030.

In its intended NDC back in 2015, it originally pledged to cut GHG emissions by 70% by 2030. The Philippines later ratified the Paris Agreement in 2017 and required that its Intended NDC (INDC) should not be automatically converted to NDC upon ratification of the Paris Agreement.

Studies said that energy-related CO2 emissions in the Philippines have been growing by 7% per year on average since 2010.
